Summer Internship
Being from a small town, I had no idea what to expect from my internship in the exhilarating city of Las Vegas. Upon arriving, I immediately realized I was not in Kansas anymore! It was an opportunity that I knew I couldn’t pass up, but was still a little apprehensive to start. As it turned out, interning with Magnetic Public Relations was the greatest learning tool I could have asked for as a college student. Classes on campus can only teach you so much. Experience is key and that is exactly what I obtained from this internship. I learned how to create media clips, research effectively, communicate with a client and write calendar listings, as well as press releases.
My second day on the job I was able to experience my first red carpet event. Needless to say, I was in love. Along the course of the summer, I helped with many diverse and intriguing events, photo-shoots and press conferences. It was inspiring being able to shadow my mentors and take in everything that went on around me.
As much as I enjoyed working out in the field, I also loved being in the office. Part of that was due to the positive working environment Magnetic provided. My mentors were always available for any questions I had and understood when I needed further instruction. From the moment I started my internship, I felt right at home. Having such great role models helped dramatically increase my writing skills, which we all know is a necessary tool to have in this field.
The end of the summer came way too fast. I was home to Kansas before I knew it, wishing I could go back. Thanks to Magnetic, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity that gave me a greater understanding of the PR world (and creative pieces for my portfolio).
